‎The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has challenged President Bola Tinubu to urgently address Nigeria’s worsening security and economic challenges or consider relinquishing power.

‎Addressing journalists at the National Assembly on Wednesday, Minority Leader Frederick Agbedi said the country is facing mounting insecurity, economic strain and growing political uncertainty, while the Federal Government appears increasingly focused on preparations for the 2027 elections.

‎According to the caucus, Nigerians are grappling with kidnappings, violent attacks, rising food prices and a weakening economy, issues they said require immediate attention rather than political manoeuvring.

‎The lawmakers pointed to the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in captivity as evidence of the deepening security crisis, arguing that the tragedy highlights the inability of authorities to adequately protect citizens.

‎They also expressed concern over the continued captivity of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State, calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to secure their release.

‎Agbedi said the government’s primary responsibility is to guarantee the safety and welfare of citizens, stressing that national recovery should take precedence over political activities and election calculations.

‎He criticised ongoing endorsements, defections and campaign-related engagements by the ruling party, describing them as distractions from pressing national issues.

‎The caucus further raised concerns about a Federal High Court judgment ordering the deregistration of five political parties, warning that such developments could affect democratic participation ahead of the 2027 polls.

‎They urged the Independent National Electoral Commission and the judiciary to ensure fairness and protect the integrity of the democratic process.

‎On the economy, the lawmakers lamented increasing inflation, unemployment and hardship across the country, saying many Nigerians are struggling under the current conditions.

‎As part of their proposals, they called for reforms within the security sector, improved welfare for security personnel and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of General Abubakar.

‎They also appealed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria to address concerns over conflicting court rulings involving political parties.

‎The caucus additionally proposed a six-month suspension of political activities linked to the 2027 elections, arguing that government attention should be fully directed toward restoring security and stabilising the economy.

‎Agbedi maintained that the opposition would continue to hold the administration accountable through legislative oversight, insisting that the country’s democratic future must be protected and guided by the interests of the people.
